Headlines (A Screen Saver)

Tue Jun 29, 2010 8:43 pm

The new SDK allows us to build our own screen savers, so I took a few minutes this evening and cranked out a simple one just to see how it all works. When active, it will display the AP's top news headlines. To install it, just click this link (https://owner.roku.com/Account/ChannelCode/?code=BRYKR)

This is great! This is largely what I found myself useing Framechannel for. The scrolling does seem to be shaky but otherwise it's working great.

I had it working once on "preview", then the next time I tried to preview it I got the default screensaver. I went back into the channel store and it synchronized again (?) and all was well :). This is great - but how about having the time bounce around too? I really like knowing what time it is :)

Don't forget the screen saver "settings".

Wed Jun 30, 2010 4:56 pm

Maybe it was obvious to others, but I was scratching my head as to why this wasn't working on my ROKU-XR. I had installed the private channel (it's not the first private channel I've added), and I also made sure I entered the channel store to sync that info with the ROKU. And at one point (to deal with a different issue), I even rebooted the ROKU (after the screen saver was installed). However, no matter what I did, every time the screen saver would come up, it was still the bouncing logo.

The "fix" turned out to be so obvious, I don't know why I didn't see it before. Apparently the newer firmware has several more screen saver options under "settings" (then there used to be). And one of those new screen saver settings, is to let you choose which of the screen savers (that are currently installed on the box) you want to use. Since these options weren't present before, I didn't think to look for them. But as soon as I used the "settings" option to select this screen saver (previously the default bouncing logo was selected), it started working as expected.

Just thought I would pass this experience along, just in case other also might not realize the need to select this screen saver (under settings) after installing this "channel"...

This is super cool.
I love the Analog clock. I grew up in the 50's -60's
so i didn't have digital until i was an adult.
I always miss analog clocks. Its rare to see them anymore.
thanks again Chris you are the man.

screensaver is a bit unlike any other channel, in that you install it and then go to the screensaver menu under settings.
