[Channel] Sirius|XM Internet Radio (SXM)

Thu Sep 09, 2010 10:21 am

The Sirius|XM Internet Radio Channel allows you to listen to your favorite Sirius|XM channels right on your Roku DVP!

Features include:
  • Channel browsing by Genre
  • Channel logos
  • Live now playing information
  • Mini-player while browsing
  • Favorites
  • Screensaver with now playing information
  • Howard Stern channels
Due to some current limitations of the Roku DVP, the Sirius|XM channel does require the use of TVersity Media Server for transcoding the internet streams to a format that the Roku DVP can play. No special configuration of TVersity is required. Simply install it on a computer on your network and make note of the IP address for configuring the channel.
TVersity Media Server is a free UPnP player for Windows, and can be downloaded from: http://tversity.com/download/

Requirements:
  • TVersity Media Server (http://tversity.com/download)
  • You must have a Sirius Internet Radio or XM Radio Online account in order to use this channel. If you do not already have an account, you can sign up for a free trial at http://www.sirius.com or http://www.xmradio.com.
  • If you are an XM subscriber... The current Roku SDK does not currently fully support internet cookies, which are required in order to retrieve the properly encrypted XMRO password. I have made it possible for the application to retrieve the encrypted password via a page on my website, but it requires that the application post your username and password to my site. I do not, and will not, ever capture or store these credentials, but if you are at all uncomfortable with this, please let me know via PM, and I can tell you how to capture the encrypted password yourself. During configuration of the channel, you will be reminded of this if you select XM Radio Online as your subscribed service.

You can add the channel via the channel store, or directly via this link: https://owner.roku.com/Account/ChannelCode/?code=SXM

I'd love to hear any suggestions, comments, criticisms, or compliments you may have. Please use this thread and/or PM to provide feedback or ask for help. And remember, this is a contest entry, so if you like it, please vote!

Thanks!
TheEndless

I have all the Sirius channels already through my Dish Network account, so this does not make sense for me.

I have XM in the car. I'm assuming that's different from XM online? Is that correct?

Otherwise, I'd be interested in trying this out.

Thanks!

On the XM Side it is an additional 2.99 per month for online accounts.

My guess is that the streams needs to be transcoded live, so he needed something that could transcode the stream and then play it over a webserver. TVersity does both of these things, so it was probably easier for him to develop the channel just using that.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like there is a TVersity for OSX.

Another oh well for me.

I already give XM money, but don't want to subscribe online too...Then I'm on OS X.

Like I said, oh well...

That's exactly correct. I just got a Mac Mini for my birthday (today, incidentally), so I'll definitely look into Mac options.

I'm sorry. I agree that ever since the merger they've been nickel and dime-ing subscribers left and right, but i figure the more platforms the streams are available on, the more worthwhile it is.

Okay, I do not want to sound stupid - but to log in to XM Online I have always used my email address...

But I cannot find the @ on the Roku keyboard provided.

Am I doing something wrong?

To get to the @, choose the "symbols" button on the left side of the keyboard.

I didn't see an @ symbol - so I used the ª and it worked :-)

However, now I cannot get TVersity to work right...

I am trying to figure out why the Roku doesn't want to speak to my TVersity on Windows 7...

Oh well - eventually I should get this working! LOL

And thanks for the response!

First its a cool Idea and I was one of those who asked for a Sirius|XM app in the past. I just cant get past the fact I have to install supporting software on another PC in order to be able to use the ROKU to stream Sirius|XM content. Then I have to leave that computer on all the time too just to listen? That to me defeats the purpose of this stand alone STB. I already subscribe to Sirius|XM online and for my vehicle. I listen to Sirius all the time on my ipod touch, andriod phone, and my computer (yes its a Mac/hackintosh). Sorry I will pass on this app for my ROKU. Great start, but not there yet. If it was stand alone I would be all over it!!!

I agree 100%, and I hated that I had to do that! Unfortunately, the Roku DVP simply doesn't support the WMA streams that Sirius|XM uses, and they don't provide any method of inline transcoding in the SDK. If they ever add support for either (or Sirius changes the stream format to a supported one), rest assured that I will immediately update the channel to be stand alone! Thanks for the feedback, and sorry for the inconvenience...

As I mentioned on another thread it is my understanding that the chipset will support streaming WMA but it requires a per box licencing fee to legally use it (same issue with DivX). Dunno about DRM support, I believe XM/Sirus streams require it :( .
