Honestly, I am convinced that DLNA is the way to go for local media, the only issue is transcoding. I really don't relish the prospect of manually transcoding all of my family videos....hundreds of them. Orb does that for me when I stream to my phone.

For what it's worth, so will TVersity and TwonkyMedia. There are other DLNA compliant servers that do as well.

Hey, FYI I loaded up Orb and tried to get it to work with the DLNA client in my Moxi DVR:
http://forums.orb.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=30659
:(
So it probably won't work with a possible future Roku DLNA client either. Guess that's the advantage of PlayOn over Orb - not being free they have some incentive to make it work with a wide variety of clients :) . The Moxi does work with PlayOn and TVersity.

If Roku is DLNA compliant, one wouldn't even need Orb. Missing the point entirely. Right now Orb is a free solution that can transcode on the fly, play ANY format to ANY device. Since Roku is not DLNA, then Orb would be the next best solution for easy local media sharing with no fuss.

Make the Roku DLNA compliant, then even Windows Media Sharing will see it.

You'd still need a server to do the transcoding into a Roku friendly format. Windows Media Sharing doesn't do that, so while they could see each other, much of the content being shared wouldn't necessarily play on the Roku.

Can I ask what exactly are the Roku friendly formats? Not being rude, just curious. I have no idea how this works and I am trying to learn. I really am convinced that if an Orb channel can be created it would be incredible...I honestly can't see how Orb gets passed up. It is one truly useful and amazing piece of software. If you install Winamp remote, that is just a custom Orb server.

It's a bit more complicated that this, but basically: mp4 and m4v (video), mp3, aac, wma and m4a (audio), and jpg and png (photos)
The biggest issue is the audio/video combinations, like with HLS streams, only AVC video and AAC audio are supported. Orb and TVersity both use MP3 in their HLS streams, which is why they don't work on the Roku. I imagine that's something that Roku will tweak in the firmware at some point, as it's been reported as an issue a number of times in the developer forum, but it's not guaranteed.

My trial is officially up now, I am wondering if it is worth it to drop $40. Yes I heard the news about it no longer being supported, but will the private channel by scyber still work as long as I don't uninstall it or upgrade the playon on my pc?

Ayyy..yayy. Now there's more battle to prevent this coming.....the Box. They s/h lock this thread and every PlayOn title. Is not really good for Roku's Business stand point about "legal contents".

@tampabayshooters: Why would they send you a channel, why are you posting that PRIVATE channel in multiple threads? This is going to be just like Hulu, Roku will block the channels, they will create them and continue to try and profit off of Roku without permission. Shady again. Why continue to try to find ways around Roku's block? Can't Roku use some sort of legal action to prevent them trying to profit off of the box?

I mean, the folks at PlayOn are officially sending emails circumventing Roku's blocks. They even have a thread started to post ways to get around the blocks and the devs have released the sourcecode for the PlayOn channel, and they are telling people to put their boxes in dev mode. http://www.playon.tv/forum/general/gene ... yon?page=2

What kind of a support nightmare will this cause, people screwing up their boxes at PlayOn's behest?

Hopefully legal action will be forthcoming. As for me, I have uninstalled PlayOn. They seem to be nothing more than script kiddie type punk hackers, (opinion) what lowlifes.

They even stated the "Official" channel was user created and they had no control over it, essentially hanging him out to dry after they advertised that it worked and tried to make it a selling point.

Hey gang,

We were contacted today by Roku and told that they were going to disallow this channel. While we are very dissapaointed by this there is not much we can do. Neither the Roku channel developer nor Roku are affiliated with PlayOn and we have no control over the situation. We were very excited about the Roku channel and excited to promote it to our customers...it was a cool feature that we thought many of our customers would really like. We don't understand why Roku would feel a need to remove a channel that was benefiting so many of you.

It is our understanding that Roku has a 30 day return policy, so if you've just purchased a Roku for PlayOn you can hopefully get a refund from them. We will continue to try to find ways to support this device.

Sorry for the bad news.

Best,
Jim

I hope and believe you meant to say "the folks at MediaMall are officially sending emails circumventing Roku's blocks". I do not believe MediaMall did.

Good catch, thanks!

"tampabayshooters" is trying to post the email he got from PlayOn and it is all over their forums over there that PlayOn is sending out emails with a new private channel.
