Roksbox Streaming 1920x1080 issue

Sun Mar 13, 2011 7:46 pm

I have an interesting issue. When I stream using roksbox at 1080p to my roku using apache I am seeing horizontal lines randomly on the screen that kinda look like static. I have made a video of it to illustrate my point.

If I stream the same video to another device, such as my PC or other DLNA device it works fine. In fact, on the roku, the video and audio are perfect, in-sync, and fluid except for these stinking lines. It only occurs at this resolution. If I use the EXACT same encoding settings but use 1280x720 it all is fine!!

Has anyone else had this occur, or know the solution?

My device is a ROKU XD|S
My TV is a LG 47LH55 (http://www.lg.com/us/tv-audio-video/tel ... 47LH55.jsp)

Here are my handbrake settings, if a setting is not listed it is handbrake default:

Container MP4 (.m4v)
Large file size (about 7GB) play time (2:06:50)
Web optimized
Source 1920x1080
Anamorphic: Loose
Modulus: 16
Display Size: 1920x800 (Automatic)
Decomb: Default
Video Codec: H.264
Frame Rate: Same as source (23.976)
Constant Quality: RF:20
Audio: AC3 (faac) Stereo 48000Hz 160kbps

Roku recommended settings from the encoding guide:

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Your TV only goes up to 1080i.
I have the same problem. I have an older JVC which does not support progressive
video in 1080. The Roku only outputs progressive video, so we are out of luck. :x

As a stopgap measure, I am converting My movies to 720p for streaming to Roku
until I can replace my TV with a newer one that supports 1080p.

If you check the link above for my tv you will see that it is 1080p. And all blueray disks I have run fine at that resolution. So it must be something else. This issue only occurs with my roku at that resolution. Thanks for the information though. I appreciate it.

I have the same problem on a true 1080p plasma TV. I see the bug on *some* videos on Vimeo, but Vimeo uses the Roku decoding engine, so I believe the bug is Roku's. Here are two videos that display the problem:
http://vimeo.com/11673745
http://vimeo.com/11470077
Just use the Vimeo app to watch these videos, and they will see the bug ("like" the two videos via your web browser, login to vimeo via the roku, and then watch these videos via the MY LIKES list on Vimeo's Roku app).

To help the engineers fix this bug, I think I can help. If you see on Vimeo the resolution of these videos, it's 1280x960 and 1280x640 respectively. They are not 1920x1080 or 1280x720, but they're ultra-widescreen. A decoder should be able to support any vertical resolution that's less than the vertical resolution of a given monitor. But in this case, if the video sizes are not exactly as Roku expects them, then these horizontal lines appear on the screen.

Please note that other TV playback devices (PS3, XBoX360, GoogleTV, AppleTV 1st Gen), when playing back the ripped versions of these videos don't exhibit this bug. I hope the Roku engineers will have a go.

I am beginning to agree with you.

Today I literally messed with every setting on my TV and it made no difference, however, I did find something out. When I hit info on my TV it displays what the current mode is. When I am in the main roku menus it displays 720p which I believe is by design. I do have the roku set for 1080p output.

I noticed in this thread: http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=36754

That for the USB channel to change to 1080p you need to add "1080p" to the filename. Which got me thinking.

On my apache web server I changed the filename to include that tag and tried again in the roksbox channel. My video had the same issue with the white lines and I checked the resolution on the TV and it only showed 720p!! It isn't changing resolution!

My encoding is sent from the web server as a FULL HD 1080p stream and the roku is sending it to the TV as 720p! I believe that this is where the anomaly is being introduced.

I have concluded that the issue is either with Roksbox not recognizing the 1080p video and prompting the roku to change to 1080p. Or..it could be a roku bug itself. But I am leaning more towards the app not flagging the content as HD.

Obviously there is nothing I can do about this. But I do beg a Roksbox developer or Roku developer to take a look at this.

Please help... Thank you for a great product. This is the only issue I have encountered thus far.

Can anyone suggest a better route of trying to get someones attention?

The Roku engineers follow this forum closely. Sometimes they respond here to an individual problem, sometimes not, but if there is a wide spread problem that's in their control they usually include fixes in the next software update.

As far as Roxbox is concerned, including the channel name in the thread title as you have done usually gets the attention of the channel developer, who is a forum member.

I have confirmed that it is an issue with roksbox. I tried the same encodings with roconnect (rokuconnect.com) and they played perfectly. Roconnect marks them as hd quality, however roconnect doesn't actually change the tv resulution to 1080p either when playing the video. It also is leaving the tv on 720p. That part may be a roku bug when streaming...

Note that both Roxbox and Roku Connect are unsupported third party private channels. Neither has been tested or approved by Roku. If something isn't working it's up to the channel developer to fix it if possible. It wouldn't be a Roku bug, particularly since the box does change to 1080p with the official approved channels.

I think I may have the 1080p thing figured out but i have to re-encode yet to test it. I'll let you know.

There will be a fix to Roksbox to make 1080p play correctly - probably sometime this weekend, along with some other new features.

Well, it seems that it still won't go to 1080p even after I thought I had it figured out.

What I noticed is that handbrake was using anamorphic which removes the black bars from the top and bottom and makes the video being sent actually 1920x800 and not 1920x1080. But according to the roku guide it is suppose to add these bars automatically.

So I tried stretching the video to full hd (which i hate because it elongates things) which is the 1920x1080 and streamed it as that and still no dice. the roku stayed at 720p.

So, the best method for detecting 1080p video would be to view the width and if it is 1920 pixels then go to 1080p so that anamorphic videos can be shown at the correct resolution as well.

Where did you hear that they are releasing a fix this week?

It's his channel. He's the developer.

I have 1080/30p now working with streaming and roConnect (rokuconect.com). The developer was extremely helpful and quick to respond. He had to alter the code to trigger the resolution change. Plays great on wireless at 15Mbps. Smooth and looks as good as blueray!
