Sonos vs Roku: my story

Fri May 20, 2011 12:51 pm

I just put up on my blog a comparison of Sonos vs Roku, exclusively for music -- at least from my household's needs point of view: http://goo.gl/EWWrs

Perhaps even better would have been an AirPort Express and an iPod Touch. If you buy refurb models you could get both for as little as $210 total. This gives you access to far more content and a nicer, easier to use interface.

Ahh, but I read in her "about" section that her husband works for Google.. heh, I dunno if going the Apple route would be his first choice :D.

We already have a number of iPods, so that's not an issue. Apart of the higher price for someone who doesn't own an iPod, the big unknown I see with the Airport Express solution is if the audio is re-compressed to go over the network and reach it, or not. If not, then it's a good solution. If yes, then it's a no-no for already heavily compressed streams like RDIO's.

Ok, I found a reply by someone online on the issue:

"[Audio is] re-compressed in Apple Lossless, encrypted, and sent to the Airport Express, where it is unencrypted, decoded, and turned into analog out or digital/optical out."

So that's a good solution too in that case, since there's no loss of quality.

I'm a singer/songwriter/recording artist.
MP-3's are to music what Telly Savales is to hair products.

And I'm a filmmaker, and I could say the exact same for consumer camcorders. However, that's what we are offered, and so that's what we have to deal with.

I have a 300-CD changer btw, which I hate, because it's cumbersome trying to find albums in it. RDIO/MOG are way more convenient. And convenience always wins for 99% of the consumers. Besides, I have 150 GB of legal music in my iTunes, there's no way I could have all that music as CDs and not fill up my living room with multiple CD changers. So no matter how much you hate compressed audio, it does the job better for my case.

I am a musician too, and the same could have been said over vinyl vs. CD's. BUT The advent of mp3 enables you as an artist to put your music in the hands of more people than ever before. A musician is able to record, produce, and distribute content independently without the need of a "music label" because the technology is at a point where it is accessible to nearly everyone. That is what sparks the creativity and promotion of the art-form. Same is true with the availability of albeit cheaper-quality film making equipment. Necessary evils whose long-term positives far outweigh the negatives.

I always thought he was an adequate actor, but I can accept and agree with good. I cannot agree to having his name "Savalas" be repeatedly misspelled in this forum. I know you were just repeating the slight from the OP, but Telly Savalas definitely deserves better than that.
Please attempt to maintain a thin veneer of civility.

He did make Who Loves Ya Baby a popular catch phrase
