Roksbox with Mac OS X Mountain Lion Webserver?

Fri Aug 17, 2012 9:59 pm

Hi,
I used to have Roksbox working with my Mac OS X "Tiger" webserver, but with my new Mountain Lion laptop, i get the following when trying to view a test photo:

- I verified that the webserver itself works by accessing http://192.168.1.101/Media/Photos/minaj.jpeg from my chromebook - that tells me the webserver is set up correct.
- Yet on the Roksbox channel, when i click on "My photos", it says "Parsing Directory Structure", then just snaps back to the previous screen.
- Roksbox is configured for:
Media Location: http://192.168.1.101
Media Root Folder: Media
Photo Folder Path: Photos
I don't have an XML file in there, just two test photos, one of which is minaj.jpeg, and a .png file.

Does anybody know if i have to do something special with the apache2 Mountain Lion webserver? With "Tiger", i had to change an httpd.conf setting - UseCanonicalName - to get Roksbox to work with that server.

regards,
js.

Rename minaj.jpeg to minaj.jpg and see if that works.

Thanks for the feedback. Renaming minaj.jpeg to minaj.jpg didn't make a difference - it still doesn't work. (I also had a png file in there - those two files - but that didn't work.) So i took that idea a bit and made great progress, although not in the Photos folder:

1) i can get an mp3 file to play from http://192.168.1.101/Media/Music
2) i can get an mp4 video to play from http://192.168.1.101/Media/Videos

So the server itself is working, Roksbox can see it, etc.

OH --- SHII---- UPDATE....I just did another test and omg it worked: I dragged a *FOLDER* of photos into /Media/Photos - that did it: Roksbox needs to see folders under /Media/Photos - not just photo files - i moved nicki minaj and the png to a folder and those show up too now. THANK YOU WilDD and Roku Forums for this dialogue!! :)

Yes, i googled how to start the webserver in Mountain Lion and found the terminal command to do it. (i had done that in my first post in this thread.) Yes, i agree with you - it's a huge ridiculous step backwards that Apple took the webserver (and ftp server) out of the System Preferences.

I was not aware of that "improvement" in Mountain Lion. My switch from 10.5.8 to Lion brought on many unpleasant "improvement" surprises, some of which I was able to find work arounds for. Even though I've been using Macs since 1985 starting with a MacPlus, it is beginning to sound like my next "upgrade" will be to something like an Ubuntu based computer.

Well, you may be much more computer-adept than i am, but i built an Ubuntu box about two years ago and i found it extremely difficult and user-unfriendly to deal with. Yes, Macbooks have some shortcomings as mentioned, but i gave up my Ubuntu box because you really have to be practically a linux sys admin to use it for many tasks. for example, i can't even get it to play youtube videos because there's no flash player. so i try to download the package for that, i get several options from tar/zip files to rpm's to apt-get, etc. then the flash alternative didn't work. the 'youtube viewer' didn't work. it was just a nightmare and i never got it to work. even audio didn't work. i had to google for very esoteric settings to get audio through the HDMI jack. (finally was able to do that.) with a Macbook (or windows), all these things just work.

I'm having the same problem. Just upgraded my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and now am unable to access any of the movies, etc I have on an external drive with my Roku. Checked that the Apache server is on "It Works!" but the directory in Roksbox just jumps me to a search window for my video media and none of my other content is visible either. I'm sure it's something to do with the way my server is set up but darned if I can figure it out. The IP address in my Roksbox settings is still correct and all of the paths are correct. Any other ideas as to what my problem may be? Thanks in advance.

Simple - but did you power cycle the Roku after the iMac upgrade?

Did you try accessing other media, like photos and music?

Maybe its the home directory of the new FTP server? Have you verified that the path to the files is still correct?
