Pandora causing serious error condition

Thu May 02, 2013 2:43 pm

I have made many attempts to test and see if Pandora is truly the culprit here. After hours of testing various combinations I am pretty certain that Pandora is responsible.

Pandora has been going into some kind of stall/hang error condition that requires a reboot to fix. At first I thought this was only having an effect on Pandora. However it appears that this error condition will cause all streaming to malfunction until the Roku is rebooted. Here are the steps I took to reproduce the problem, and it was reproducible 100% of the time on the Roku2 I was using.

Attempt 1:
Reboot Roku
Select Pandora channel
Select Pandora station
Pandora plays song 1
Pandora hangs/stalls at this point
Exit Pandora station
Exit Pandora channel
Select ShoutCAST channel
Select random ShoutCAST station
Music buffers to 99% and does not play
Exit ShoutCAST station
Exit ShoutCAST channel
Select Live365 channel
Select random Live365 station
Music buffers to 99% and does not play
Exit Live365 station
Exit Live 365 channel
Select Pandora channel
Select Pandora station
Music screen displays "Retrieving..." but does not seem to retrieve

Note: The Roku will respond to remote control commands etc as expected. The player does not seem "frozen" or otherwise broken in any way.

Attempt 2:
Reboot Roku
Select ShoutCAST channel
Select random ShoutCAST station
Buffers to 100% near instant and plays music
Music played for at least 25 minutes
Exit ShoutCast station
Exit ShoutCAST channel
Select Live365 channel
Select random Live365 station
Buffers to 100% near instant and plays music
Music played for at least 15 minutes
Exit Live365 station
Exit Live 365 channel
Select Pandora channel
Select Pandora station
Pandora plays song 1
Pandora plays song 2
Pandora hangs/stalls at this point
Exit Pandora station
Exit Pandora channel
Select ShoutCAST channel
Select random ShoutCAST station
Music buffers to 99% and does not play
Exit ShoutCAST station
Exit ShoutCAST channel
Select Pandora channel
Select Pandora station
Music screen displays "Retrieving..." but does not seem to retrieve

Attempt 3:
Reboot Roku
Select ShoutCAST channel
Select random ShoutCAST station
Buffers to 100% near instant and plays music
Music played for at least 10 minutes
Exit ShoutCast station
Exit ShoutCAST channel
Select Pandora channel
Select Pandora station
Pandora plays song 1
Pandora plays song 2
Pandora hangs/stalls at this point
Exit Pandora station
Exit Pandora channel
Select Netflix channel
Select Sesame Street video
Select play episode 11
Episode Title screen with retrieving bar displays (bar fills 100%)
Loading screen with bar displays
Loading bar fills approx. 25%
Error screen displays "We're having trouble playing this video..."
Select "OK" to exit error screen
Exit "episode screen"
Select random "Leap Frog" video
Select play
Episode Title screen with retrieving bar displays (bar fills 100%)
Loading screen with bar displays
Loading bar fills approx. 25%
Error screen displays "We're having trouble playing this video..."
Select "OK" to exit error screen
Exit "episode screen"
Select "Call the MIdwife" (Don't judge me!)
Select "play episode 5"
Episode Title screen with retrieving bar displays (bar fills 100%)
Loading screen with bar displays
Loading bar fills approx. 25%
Error screen displays "We're having trouble playing this video..."

I tried many different combinations of the above over a period of several hours. In each attempt my Roku behaved perfectly and worked exactly as it should, UNTIL I tried to use Pandora for streaming music. Once Pandora entered the error condition it is experiencing I could not stream video or music until I rebooted the Roku. This was true of both online media such as Netflix, and local media streaming from my Plex server.

I also noticed that Pandora seems to think it is still playing music to me. Whenever I re-entered the Pandora channel AFTER the error condition had happened, the station I was last listening to would be displaying a speaker icon, as if it were currently playing, but of course it is not.

I think I ran into this similar situation once before (used to use Pandora to help put my son to sleep). I'll double-check again tonight, and will add it to my report this week.

Hi TWoods,

I have tried to reproduce this without succes,Pandora just works here -- I have LTs and an HD (been listening to pandora for just over 2 hours now on one of the LTs as I write this) so perhaps it is specific to your setup? Pandora + roku2+certain router = trouble ? I would try deleting/re-adding the pandora channel to see if that helps -- good luck

Pandora has been doing the same thing for me. The song freezes after 2-5 minutes and then makes every other channel unplayable.

I can play all other channels for an indefinite period of time without issue. It is only Pandora that is causing a problem. My signal strength is listed as excellent.

I just tried uninstalling Pandora and reinstalling the channel. Hopefully that fixes the problem. It has been playing for about 5 minutes without a hitch.

I have a Roku HD and a Netgear wnr1000 router.

Deleting the channel and reinstalling seems to have fixed the problem. If the problem reoccurs I'll make another reply.

I'm having the same issue. Freezes after one or two songs. I tried removing the Pandora channel and then adding it back and it still happens.

My internet connection is listed as excellent. Any thoughts would be great.

I have seen this problem with my Roku Express.

More then that, I listen to Pandora pretty much every day, and after about 1.5-2 hrs, my Roku Express reboots itself if it doesn't go into the stall state (remote doesn't function to Roku, forcing me to manually reboot it).

This only happens with Pandora.

I listen to Pandora often on my Roku 2 (4210r) and Premiere Plus; and never have any problems with Pandora. I have slow DSL and use Ethernet connections.

You might try Remove channel, Restart Roku, Add channel .
