How to turn off ads?

Thu Dec 26, 2013 1:51 pm

Hi;
I bought my Roku 3 with money, I'm not part of a trial program or anything, but I still get ads on the front page.

Is there an option in the settings menu I can use to opt out? Or do I need to get Roku to disable it remotely?
I can show my receipt if there's been a misunderstanding.

Thanks

Nope. It's part of the product and a major reason the Roku products are so cheap. You can block ads at your router with lots of time and effort... personally I deal with ads. It's just a part of life in our current world.

No. This is by design.

They're not cheap. If I wanted cheap I'd get a chromecast; I wanted a streaming solution that worked as opposed to something that looked nice.

Is there a way I can alter the machine's HOSTS file or something? My router doesn't support remote blocking of domains.

Who on earth thought this was a good idea in the first place?

You may as well return it if it matters that much to you. You can't turn them off.

Who on earth would spend this much time complaining about a relevant-to-the-product ad on ONE screen that doesn't affect your streaming at all?

As far as "cheap", they're very reasonably priced compared to a lot of alternatives. The low-price-point Roku is only $15 more than the Chromecast (and offers hundreds more channels).

The ads are not that intrusive, just suck it up or return it and get a Chromecast. No simple way to block them.

A couple of strips of duct tape will cover that right third of the screen quite well. If you spend enough time staring at the menus instead of watching content then you will not miss that part of the screen during content streaming.

Keep in mind Roku is giving you free subscription to their Channel Store and Firmware upgrade services. Which is the reason these ads exist. Pays for their server costs I would imagine.

You guys are adorable.

I'll return it first thing tomorrow morning. I'm a customer, not a commodity.

Shame on you, Roku.

Chromecast is a different type device. Heck you need a computer to play the video and cell phone to navigate the flower thing that ain't cheap. Good bye ilsambard enjoy your Chromecase. Please do not post complains about your phone bill after streaming for hours to your Chromcast and forgot to set your phone to WiFi resulting in $15 /GB over charge after your plan's allowance.

Do you close your eyes driving down the street too? Or call up Vizio and complain that you paid for your TV, and shouldn't have to look at their glowing logo under the picture? If you can't deal with an ad on a MENU SCREEN, you might never want to open a magazine, go to a sporting event or turn on your television...

Sorry in the real world everyone is a commodity or number. Only your mother thinks you are special.
