MP4 playback: "play all" random

Sat Mar 29, 2014 3:44 pm

I've got a bunch of MP4 clips on a USB stick, and I'd like to have them play on my roku in a continuous, random pattern. I don't see any way to do this on the official Roku Media Player channel; it will only let me sort by name and play one at a time. Is there any way to do what I'm looking for with the official app or a different one?

I don't think that is possible. I also don't think there are any channels that allow the "random" part although I think there may be a couple of channels that allow play lists for mp4 files.

The "random" part is less important, but continuous play from one file the next is essential ... it seems that Nowhere USB might be able to do this ... gonna check it out.

Nope, Nowhere USB also won't play continuous with MP4. Perhaps PlayUSB?

I don't know of anything that will do infinite looping. Not sure the firmware is capable of that.

I can live without infinite looping; all I really need is that right after it finishes playing one mp4 it automatically starts playing the next one. I don't even care how it determines "next." PlayUSB won't do this either. It seems such a basic functionality; I can't believe it's not possible on the roku!

If you don't have to have your music on a USB, you can upload your music to Google Play Music than use Nowhere Music to play.

SOLVED: Nowhere USB will do continuous play. Instead of pressing OK to start, press the Play/Pause button. It will play the selected file, then keep going in sequence from that file onwards. Found this tip buried in the Nowhere USB thread in this forum.

Roku Media Player will also play all the videos, you just need to hit PLAY on the folder instead of going into the folder.

Thanks RokuDale, that's great to know! BTW, are the features and controls of the Roku Media Player channel documented on the website? Did look but couldn't find it.

There is some documentation in the help screens. I'm not sure the documentation on the website has kept up with the design and implementation of the channel itself. Playing a folder is mentioned but only for music and for photos. It left off the part that it also works for a folder of videos.
