TESTING - Multiple reboots daily

Wed May 28, 2014 11:57 am

I get at least 2 a day.

Between the last 2 actually updates I went through about 200 non-update updates.

Are ROKU devices not smart enough to know when they are streaming content and thus should not interrupt the user experience by performing a update that actually updates nothing?

How about checking for updates in the background, then notifying us there is an upgrade available?

tia

note: Changed subject from "Why so many non-update updates?" to better reflect the actual issue I was having.

The Roku only checks for updates during downtime (when you're not streaming) and during a reboot.

If you're seeing it at any other time, it's not an update. More likely, you are "reloading" a channel. A MicroSD card will help with that.

As long as I have had my rokus, the Fox Business channel has updated every time I exit the channel store.

What actually appears on screen when you experience this? And are you actually in the middle of a video when it happens? Like Shawn said, it should only happen during idle periods or reboots, but definitely not while you're in the middle of streaming something.

ROKU 2 HD
V 5.4 - 3358

Well that would explain why I don't see others complaining about this.

What do I see when it happens?

If I am streaming content it freezes, then goes to the bouncing ROKU logo, then ends up at the home screen.

Twice a day, random times, just happened why I was streaming iheart radio.

Yep, been happening for so long I don't know if it started the first day I got the ROKU or sometime after.

Nice to know this is not intentional, now how do I fix it?

I believe it checks for updates on boot, but the issue is that your device is rebooting when it shouldn't be. The updates aren't causing the reboot, the reboot is causing the update check.

^This.

A few things to try:

  • Check to see how hot the unit is. If it feels warm, that's relatively normal. If it feels "hot," then try ventilating it (small fan blowing across the unit, etc);
  • How many channels do you have installed? Try reducing the number and see what happens;
  • Add a MicroSD card if you don't already have one;

So it's randomly rebooting and the reboot causes an update check, makes sense, thx.

It's in an open cabinet, put my hand on it, very warm but not so hot I couldn't keep my hand on it.

36 channels.

What would the micro sd do for me? I don't play games btw.

The MicroSD card stores channels that aren't often used in order to prevent having to download them again. Say you don't often watch HuluPlus. After a while, the Roku frees up storage space and will only download it the next time you decide to watch it. Rather than downloading it from the Channel Store, it's on the MicroSD card and starts much faster.

If you're having a memory issue that is causing the crash, it might help. I suggested it because it's a relatively cheap quick test.

26 hours, no reboots.

Only change is I did remove a few channels. Must have guessed right because one of them appears to be the offender.

Would have done it one at a time to nail down the problem but at that rate it might have taken a month to fix the issue.

Thanks again for the help.

36 hours, no reboots :)

Nice being able to sit down to watch a movie and not have a reboot 5 minutes into it.
