Will You Be Adding Sling TV To Your Roku?

Thu Jan 08, 2015 11:56 am

I know there is a larger thread about Sling TV, but I'm interested in comments from those who actually plan on using the service.
You can sign up for an email notice for when Sling TV starts here:
http://www.sling.com/

Not being interested in ESPN I don't expect to use the service year around. But I can see using it periodically, especially when Network TV slows down at the end of summer and early autumn. Perhaps sign up for a month or two to add some programming options, particularly for TNT, TBS, and the Family Channel. Also very interested in the $5 add-ons and will be looking at those when the time comes.
Are you planning on using the Sling TV service?

I plan on adding it. When it comes available (later this month, according to a Cnet interview I saw with the Sling CEO), I do plan to subscribe. If it is all it seems to be, I won't keep it long, but will drop it, then add it back, along with the sports add-on (which the CEO said would include "the rest of the ESPNs") this fall, in time for college kick-off.

The ESPN package is the only thing that interests me, but because of how closely ESPN is tied to college football, it interests me greatly. The rest of the stuff? I'm fine without it.

I doubt it. There's really nothing there I'm interested in.

I think I will wait to see what else they add before taking the plunge. When they offer an entertainment package minus ESPN I might consider it.I like nature/science/history type stuff and movies -- between the free channels (smithsonian,PBS,Youtube and private channels) and my subs to netflix and Hulu I am a very happy streamer as is.

Too much for me since I have no use for the ESPNs that are in it. This would basically eat up the remainder of my monthly "TV" budget.

"Will You Be Adding Sling TV To Your Roku?"

For me the answer to that is a resounding: ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!

I see zero value in the service for me so it would require that pigs are at least lining up for takeoff before I would even consider it.

That is not to say that it will not be a valuable addition for others but I have access to plenty of good to great content without an additional expense.

I already have several channels that just sit in my lineup without use (they are at least free to use) and Sling would be another and it would cost if I ever chose to use it,

I've been looking at the actual channels mentioned so far to see what might interest me. That is the best place to start to decide if there are TV Series/Movies etc., that would make the subscription worthwhile, even if only for a few months or for a season of episodes, or live TV. Of course the content may not be there for everyone. Cost/benefit is worth considering.

NimbleTV Pro subscribers may now be forced to look elsewhere such as Sling TV. Which is perhaps what Dish wanted?

Yeah I wouldn't bet on anything until it is out. I was all for getting CBS's streaming options until I saw what shows it had to offer. Or better described as what Little it had to offer. I was on the side that thought $6 was reasonable, not after seeing what content they are making available to stream.

To me CBS seemed like a half-hearted attempt. CBSN on the other hand has been a different animal.
Sling TV sounds like the real deal. I think Disney has been wanting more eyes on their channels, and Dish seems very serious about this offering, coming out of the gates on Roku and other devices. Sling TV is the one to watch.

Strongly considering it. I've been cable-free for 5 years, but still miss Food Network, Travel Channel, and access to CNN (not that I watch it that much). I'd REALLY like my local Fox Sports channel so I can watch Angels Baseball. Assuming that's on a $5-$10/month Sports Extra package, it won't be much more than my current MLB.tv subscription for the baseball season, plus I'll get the other channels.

Hello:

I will not be considering it for $20 with the initial limited lineup. For the same $20 you can get both Dish and DirecTV basic package that include the locals, DVR, more channels plus valid credentials for authenticated on-line viewing and 90 day promotional premium channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.). It is uncertain whether you could use Sling/Dish ID and PW for authenticated on-line viewing.

I can already get my locals free via QAM and NimbleTV and already pay $16 for Hulu and NF. Not sure if I'd pay an extra $20 just to watch my favorite network TNT. So far, I've been able to watch my TNT shows and AMC Walking Dead via PLEX so not sure if I would want to pay $36 for TV when I can watch everything for $16 or less.

However, eventually they will add more content or a promotion that will make me re-consider. With that said, I will be "on the lookout" but not take the plunge when it is released.

I have satellite tv now but I will try it for a month just to see. My contract is almost up and my bill will be going up in February.
For me cutting the cord was not an option due to loving college football and monday night football but this has changed that.

One report said that the NFL games were not going to be included because of Verizon exclusive deal with the league. College football is a go, to my understanding.
