Roku Firmware 6.1 discussion

Tue Jan 13, 2015 6:47 pm

So, new stuff:

Menu rearranged
System Restart option added
Targeted advertising by default added (with opt out)
Audio options to control digital out formats and stereo/surround including 'Auto' settings added
New Roku Media Player app
Seems Faster™

What did you spot?

ADDITIONAL: Improved Miracast lag (especially with audio glitches) [Still beta - YMMV]

Not on the stick. Try rebooting (new option!). Try disconnecting then reconnecting the wifi. There's always factory reset. So, basically, have you tried switching it off and on again?

Same issue on my Roku 1. Try letting the screensaver kick in. Once you come back out of it, the light will stop blinking.

Too bad I just figured that out after doing a factory reset.

Really liking the new firmware, especially the audio options. However, one request if possible - my receiver supports DD and DTS over HDMI, but doesn't support DD+ over HDMI. Would it be possible to have an additional surround option for both DD/DTS but *not* DD+?

Hello:

Anyone know what is "new" on the Roku Media Player channel? With the new firmware update the RMP seems to have come in as a new channel based on the location I found it on my list. I opened it and it works fine but I don't see anything new about it. Can Roku staff or anyone else confirm any changes or new features to the RMP channel? Thanks in advance for any input.

Updated one of my Roku 2 XS's from version 5.5 build 410 to version 6.1 build 5518. On a side note this update appeared today as it wasn't there when I manually ran the update check yesterday afternoon while trying to troubleshoot some wifi problems I was having.

One fix I noticed with the Roku Media Player, besides it being moved in my channel listing to the end after the firmware update, was they apparently fixed the file name being cut off when on the file's page. [Edit: The cutting off of long file names is still there on some of my file names so this issue may not be fixed in this version.] Still wish they would have the option to sort by date rather than A to Z or Z to A.

As previously mentioned there is now an option to restart (don't remember if there in older firmware) via Settings -> System -> System restart -> Restart. There is also a Privacy option located at Settings -> System -> Privacy, with the option to "Reset advertising identifier" and the option to "Limit ad tracking". Don't recall the Digital Audio Out options being there before under Settings -> Audio -> Digital Audio Out. The options for that setting are; Auto detect, PCM-Stereo, DD, DD+, DD+ DTS.

My Roku 3400X MHL stick updated to 6.1 Build 5523 early this morning. I see the same changes that everyone else is reporting. Just wondering why mine is 5523 and not 5520. Is it because it is the MHL stick?

Yes. Each Roku unit will get slightly different build numbers due to slight hardware differences (in most cases).

I had a little problem with a couple of channels freezing up and causing my 2xs to reboot when I clicked to watch them but after removing and reinstalling them they're back to normal. Can't say that was the result of the update but it was a suspicious coincidence. I like the restart. -wes

Good info thanks. Wasn't sure if I too was imagining some operations being faster :). And some channels that often used to load the video icons one at a time now seem to display them all at once after a pause.

Interesting that some System Settings have been moved to a 3rd-level menu, to de-clutter the 2nd-level Settings menu.

Coincidentally I was re-organizing some family Roku's yesterday and got hit by the update mid-stream. Seems that moving a channel icon on the home screen is now the second option in the context menu, whereas before it was the third option from the top. In general I like that it now takes one less key press, but I kept getting tripped up since my finger already has the muscle memory to rapidly press * then Down and another Down then OK (which now goes to "Remove channel" instead of "Move channel").

Another change seems to be that the instant replay button on the remote now seems to rewind further than before (I didn't measure it, but perhaps it was previously ~10 secs and now it's ~30 seconds?). Anyone else seeing this?

I too noticed that the existing Roku Media Channel gets moved to the end of the home screen after the update. Not a big deal, but annoying to have to move it back to its original position on the channel grid for all family Rokus one by one (x 25).

I also had a couple of channel glitches with a few Rokus requiring re-install, but I think most were happening right before the update?

After testing, the Miracast seems better. Less laggy, if playing a video (to test) on full screen in IE over wifi I get much less noticeable audio glitches. Still in beta though, so ymmv.

Can't play any Simpsons episodes on the FX Now app after the update.
