Sling TV: Have they added AMC and other channels?

Tue Feb 17, 2015 5:21 pm

Hello forum members:

Simple question for those whom have already signed up to Sling. Have they already added AMC? What other channels (from that network)? I've read that they did, but I haven't seen it added on their website nor an announcement on their blog. Only that Epix is coming as a separate add-on. Can anyone clarify? I am waiting a bit to see how Sling evolves before signing up. I would like to use my trial after AMC has been added so I can watch current "Walking Dead" season. Any other additions like BBC America would also be welcome. Thanks to anyone who can confirm this.

Happy streaming.

Man, everyone here needs to take a deep breath. Just chillax.

SLINGTV is not even 2 weeks old and you guys are asking if they are adding channels left and right. The baby has just been born.

And secondly, if you think for 1 millisecond that they are going to add the likes of AMC and all that premium programming that is at it's HEIGHT of popularity, think again.

Dish is not going to CUT OFF IT'S NOSE TO SPITE IT'S FACE here. If they see a drop in REGULAR subscribers that get SWITCHED over to SLINGTV, it will be dead. No doubt.

Anyone remember DISH NOW! prepaid service? Granted it was not the greatest thing ever, but it was close. You got to pay BY THE DAY what you wanted. And you could sign up for premiums(HBO/SHOWTIME/STARZ/CINEMAX/PORN/ETC....) ALONE without any channel package requirement BY THE DAY as well. It was great.

Was not perfect though(No HD/No Locals/No local Sports networks, only national like ESPN)

Lasted only about 3 years though. DISH dumped it(actually renamed it and repackaged it and took away all the advantages to the customer. Still exists in a GARBAGE FORM now.) because people were dumping their regular Dish subs for that. Plus others were taking complete advantage of it. And DISH Investors went NUTS! So it was killed.

I hope this works out too. But eople, have patience, and do not be surprised if this is DROPPED after a year or two.

re the possibility of Sling being dropped if it cannibalizes too much of its regular sat sub's, given the pending HBO service and other momentum towards programming over the net, I'd bet that won't happen. But, there probably isn't going to be -- really quickly anyway -- things like extensive on-demand programming and the adding of too many channels to the package at that $20 price. I'd expect them to have other mix and match bundles fairly quickly (as they can sign up content providers) though.

There was talk of Apple getting into this too. They certainly have the pockets to do it if they think they can make money at it.

Me, I'd like PBS, TCM, cooking channel, DIY, HGTV and a few others, bundled with ESPN along with the ability to look at episodes a few days back if not on-demand.

But yes, the baby was just born.

I subscribed during the Beta. Even if it cannibalizes a lot of traditional cable customers it's not going anywhere. The cat is now out of the bag and this is just one more offering for pay television. Other services will come along. The barriers to entry are lower than any other form of pay television. This being said, I do not think this is a cable television killer. It's more for people like myself that want a stripped down cable package and do not want 500 channels. It's also not for the plug and play crowd. 2015 is the year of streaming television.

I agree. This won't kill cable. And that's actually a good thing. If it can be successful and not be a threat, then it (that is, services such as and like Sling TV) can thrive and grow and offer what I want at a good price. Cable doesn't have to fail for Sling TV to succeed.

My thinking is that dish may only have a set number of channels that they contracted to be able to have on Sling.. But there is the possibility that it is an experiment to see what happens and if they get enough requests that they might could get other channels to negotiate towards streaming their content.. Also tiers could be experimented with, and maybe instead of dish losing subs they might gain by way of seeing what people actually want to pay for.. Give us less, but more concise packages, this could change the way they do business..

They have contracted a lot more channels than they have put on the system. I don't really know the reasoning. I do know because they have announced it that AMC and Epix are coming. I was told on the phone that BBC World news and BBC America are also coming. They have contracts for A&E and Discover networks but there is no indication from Sling those channels are going to be put on the system.

You might want to do a simple Google search before commenting. Dish announced last week when Sling went live to public that agreements for AMC, BBC America, World News, IFC, Sundance and others were made. Several days later a deal with Epix.

They've already announced the AMC, BBC America, and several other related channels will be added later this year, but they have not been yet. Given Sling TV's popularity, I doubt it will be dropped. In fact, I expect competitors to enter the arena by summer, if not before.

96% of the nation can get PBS with an antenna and there is a free PBS streaming channel for on-demand. HGTV is part of Sling TV already.

As to TCM, GetTV is a free OTA alternative. Not as good as TCM, but pretty darn good. GetTV is available to 2/3 of the nation with an antenna.

What's going to kill cable is time, or more precisely demographics. Young adults don't want cable and are even as we post establishing their media buying patterns. Cable will die a slow death along with the Baby Boom generation. But that's a good thing. Having time to adjust is better for everyone.

I just signed up this morning (had trouble getting in to Roku this morning). I can't wait to come home and try it out.
This is getting close to the Holy Grail. It's right on the edge with being pricy, but I still went ahead.

My problem is that I cannot put up an antenna, and I'm too far away to use an indoor antenna. If I could get all my local channels OTA I would be thrilled. I do not want to sign up with cable or Dish just to get local channels.
Instead I have to have this kludge of using Hulu, Netflix, and now SlingTV. Aereo was my hero, except now they were put out of business.
What I would like to see is a website like Sling that gives you an ala carte option so I can sign up with just the channels I want to watch. I don't care about sports, but I do care about stuff like the Cooking Channel and AMC.
I'm very thrilled to maybe have the option to watch The Walking Dead live sometime soon!!!
So, I hope they don't get sued by the big boys, and I hope other cable channels come on board and see this as an opportunity to reach more people. I'd also like to see local channels in the future, but they need to tread carefully on that so they don't wind up like Aereo.
