Is Roku 4K here?

Sat Mar 14, 2015 9:18 am

I'm guessing we see the new ROKU 4k within the next month. I've gotten emails from ROKU about the price for the ROKU 3 being $79.99 and now many websites have similar prices. March is when the 2 and 3 were released, I'm pretty sure. All signs point to an announcement soon.

Hello:

I don't know about you, but I would be pretty pissed if I buy a Roku 3 at a discounted promotional price and then weeks later Roku announces/sells a new better unit. Now, it is possible that Roku is discounting its Roku 3 model since it is now "dated" and also to be competitive with Apple TV. Current ATV3 is being sold now for $69 as a way to push sales with the new HBO Now 3 month exclusive partnership deal.

A new Roku could very well be on its way. A new $35 Raspberry Pi is now available with a Quad-core CPU so a new Roku with better hardware for the same ~$100 price point seems to be plausible in the very near future. I personally would like to see an Android-based Roku 4 with Quad-core CPU so Roku can do what AndroidTV and FireTV can do plus everything Roku 3's do now.

Why would you be pissed? $80 is a great price for a Roku 3. It's not like Roku 3s are obsolete, and it's not like 4K is widely available yet.
Yeah, I got some Rokus.

Fire TV has been available for $85 a few times, too. Perhaps that is some of the reason. I wouldn't doubt a new Roku is coming soon, though. I'm sure that's the main reason.

Roku 3 has been available for a while now. If someone were to buy it now and be upset that a new one could possibly come soon, that's really in them. We all know the life cycle of typical gadgets.

Typically someone on the internet digs through the FCC filings and finds the new Roku hardware a month or so before it's announced. I haven't seen those FCC posts yet...

Yeah you would definitely have heard of it by now. The only new boxes in the near future are the 4210x and the 4230x which are basically the same as Roku 3 but without Ethernet ports (WiFi Only). According to the article below they might have some minor cosmetic changes but still a Roku 3 at heart.

That happens every time a new model is introduced, and you can count on them complaining about it here, demanding refunds and generally threatening
all sorts of litigation because they were deceived...

Oh, I can almost guaranty, based on Roku's history, that a new faster, better device is on its way.. The cycle has been a new "flagship Roku" every two years or so.
Yeah, I got some Rokus.

I sure hope there's a higher end new 4K model on the horizon that does include the ethernet port. I like to hardwire in streaming devices whenever possible. (My Chromecast and Roku streaming stick are my only exceptions.)

I would be really surprised if we see a 4k unit out of Roku right now. Very small market. I do see a new unit showing up soon but I would be surprised to see a 4k unit right now.

I bought 2 Roku 2 XS's and a month later the 3's came out. Oh well, I got them at a good price. I do own a 3, and I still use the 2 XS's as well.

I'd like to see a new Roku with Full Android on it so I could run all those cool apps I run on my phone and Tablets. I looked at those Android set top boxes, but a lot of bad reviews.
Roku 3, Roku LT & Roku 1, Kodi running on Raspberry Pi 2, Plex Server.

I actually don't care about 4k really. But I have four Roku's already and actually could do with another. I hate to buy another Roku3 and would prefer something new to justify the purchase. But my key point being that the ethernet port is a necessity for me.

I'd probably get one, even with a 1080p TV. Provided Netflix and other providors supplies sufficient bandwidth, 4k scaled to 1080p should still be superior to just 1080p end to end. Also provided the hardware doesn't botch a simple scale from 4k to 1080p. ;).

Updated hardware would be nice, on its own. I wouldn't mind putting my Roku 3 in the bedroom and giving my XS away...
Panasonic G25 50" Plasma/ G25 42"
Pioneer VSX1120 AVR/ Denon 1909 AVR
Dish DTVPal OTA DVR
Pioneer BDP-51FD Bluray Player/ Denon 1610 BDP
Roku 3/ Roku 2XS
Amazon Fire TV box
7.1 speakers/ B&W Bookshelf + 8" sub
