Roku 2 4210R IR remote issues.

Sun Apr 26, 2015 7:19 pm

I bought a brand new Roku 2 today and I immediatly started having issues with what appeared to be keypad lag on the supplied IR remote control. With the remote approx 10-12 feet away and in direct line of sight to the Roku 2 ( it does not matter even if I put the remote 1 inch away) if I press the up, down left or right buttons or any button for that matter ,approx 50 % of the time the device does not respond to my remote key presses.

Paying close attention to the LED on the device, the white LED on the Roku 2 does not respond either when this occurs. Is my unit defective or is this occurance normal?

I read another thread on here with someone else having similar issues, however he or she stated the problem does not occur once in an application, but for me it does.

Thanks

Mine seems the same. Can't remember if I noticed in the apps as well but definitely on the main menu. I've just been living with it since it's just an extra Roku for my extra TV. (My main TV has a Roku3 2013 with the wifi direct remote.)

the white LED on the Roku 2 does not respond either when this occurs.

First, throw away the cheap Chinese batteries that came with the remote and replace them with fresh, brand name alkalines.
Note that the IR remote response isn't as fast as the R3 RF remote, but the LED should blink with every press.

I think they came with what looked like to be duracell batteries, will try another set tomorrow. You mentioned the IR remote not being as fast as...I dont have an issue with delayed keypresses, it appears that on mine it seems to how can I put it, miss a beat often, as if one did not press the button hard enough.

If this is a characteristic of the Roku 2 ( which I what I am trying to guage and not a defect ) then Im going to get the Roku 3 instead. Shame, as all the reviews I read said something along the lines that the "only" difference is the Roku 2 does not have voice search or headphone jack and motion sensor on remote. No one mentioned this quirk.

I think it's pretty safe to say that ignoring key presses is NOT the expected behavior of any Roku, unless the batteries are bad or the unit is defective.

Changed battery still no joy. Reset device no joy. Changed to 2.4ghz WiFi and it seems to be better? Looks like my unit is defective.

I'm going to try another roku 2 if it fails then I'll just buy the 3.

One more thing to try. If you hold the remote very close to the box does it respond normally? (the IR receiver is directly below the LED)
If it does, it can be an indication of local IR interference. Florescent lights can cause problems.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately as per my first post I already tried the remote stuck against the Roku 2, still stops and starts.

Putting WiFi on 2.4Ghz band aid fixed it.

Yeah, but that really doesn't make any sense. WiFi doesn't have anything to do with the IR remote.

Well, exchanged it yesterday for another 2015 Roku 2, same thing, when using 5Ghz wireless. Seems normal and good with 2Ghz. I shall await to see this issue surface when further devices are sold I guess.

It is almost as if the unit processing power is being pushed once in 5Ghz mode, thus creating this issue. I may or may not exchange it for a version 3.

WiFi channel should have no impact on the Roku 2 (model 4210). The remote isn't a WiFi remote on that model. The Roku 2 (2720) uses a WiFi remote. Are you sure you have the 4210? If so, then the WiFi has nothing to do with the remote, since the 4210 is an IR remote.

If you aren't happy with the new Roku 2 Model 4210 then get an old Roku 3 Model 4200 for the same price. No need to buy the new Roku 3 Model 4230.

The WiFi Direct Connect remote works great. You can point it anywhere, take to another room - I love it. IR remotes are for chumps lol I kid I kid

I purchased it from Bestbuy and the model number on both sealed boxes stated 4210. I dont understand why this is the case for me either to be honest, as I am aware its an IR remote .

I just purchased a Roku 2 4210 from Walmart yesterday. I too found that the IR remote was extremely slow to respond no matter how far/close I was to the unit. I have now done as you, and switched to the 2.4ghz network (I was on the 5ghz after setup). Night and day difference. The remote now responds as expected and I see very little delay at all. It doesn't make sense, but there is an obvious change depending on the frequency of network.

Hi! I'm a longtime Roku user and recently upgraded 2 units from the 2XS to the 4210. To avoid interference from wifi direct (which I initially thought this unit didn't include) on the already-crowded 2.4ghz band, I moved the new units over to the 5ghz band to better isolate them.

This worked fine, although I ran into the same issue noted in this thread about the ir remote being unresponsive when the unit is set to 5ghz. It certainly does seem strange since it's not even using wifi for the remote, but only one in 5-10 button presses registers in this mode. It resolves as soon as it's changed back to 2.4ghz. Also of note, it only seems to happen once a video begins playing, not on the home screen etc.

I called customer service and they said they hadn't heard about the issue but that they would note it. Any other ideas or updates? Seems like it must be some kind of software issue, so hopefully it can be fixed but who knows how long it could take. I'm contemplating returning these units and just sticking with the XS as it's a bit slower but doesn't have these issues. Thanks!
