Roku 2 with No Internet for Travel

Sun Jan 03, 2016 3:49 am

Currently I use a Micca Spek when I travel to watch movies and listen to music. Recently I have purchased 3 Roku 2's to use in my home for watching movies, netflix, etc. When using my Micca I either use a USB stick or a portable hard drive for data. I am considering purchasing a Roku to replace my Micca but my concern is that if I get somewhere with no internet access I won't be able to use my Roku even for local content from the USB port. Can someone please clarify?

Have you tried disconnecting one from the Internet while at home to see what happens?

It seems to get stuck on the set up page for selecting the internet service.

Far as I know, Roku requires an Internet connection to operate.

it needs an internet connection to set up but not to operate ...while travelling one could create a wifi hotspot on their phone or use a freebie at McDonalds or something to set up the roku then once up and running turn the hotspot off and use the usb function to stream from a drive .... problem being is every time it rebooted or left idle and it does an update check one would have to repeat this

That would be quite some trick dragging a TV set, Roku, and extension cord into a McDonalds to setup...

For Rokus with USB ports, once you have gone through the initial setup and linked your Roku to your account, a network connection isn't required to play media off the Roku's USB port.

Thanks Dale. Just so I know what to expect on my upcoming trip I am assuming it will look for an internet connection, when it doesn't find one or I don't want to use one what do I do?

You can do a test before you leave.

Get everything ready (content) to play from the USB drive/stick. Then remove the Roku from your network. Then boot it. You're now replicating the scenario (no Internet). If you can play content from the USB still, you're good to go.

How do I do this? I have tried but it appears by default it connects to the wifi when it boots.

Or you could change the password you entered for the roku to connect to your router to an incorrect password.
