Is it worth upgrading Roku XD to a 3 or 4?

Wed Mar 23, 2016 3:22 pm

I currently have a Roku XD for the bedroom, TV isn't 4k and I don't intend to have a 4k TV there anytime soon. I do have a 4k tv in the family room but I use an HTPC there and don't know if I'll find any use for the Roku there but would consider it as an option.

I find that the loading time on the XD over WiFi is somewhat slow. It's my first and only Roku so I don't know if a Roku 3 using ethernet is any faster and I do have an ethernet cable at this location already. I would consider buying Roku 4 even if I don't intend on using it for 4k if it's faster, as I'm after performance improvements.

Price difference aside, would I find improvement if I got a Roku 3 and hardwire and would a Roku 4 benefits even more?

Roku 2 is the best deal, same hardware as Roku 3, including ethernet. Only difference is the Remote. Roku 4 honestly is not recommended by most here unless you really need the 4k or the optical port. Which Roku XD do you have the Roku 2 XD or the Roku XD first generation (post the model #)? Either one, the answer is yes to the improvement. Emphatic yes if it's first generation. Does your bedroom tv have HDMI?

I have a Roku 2 XD, 3050X

It does have HDMI, 1080p Samsung.

Why isn't the Roku 4 recommended?

Also important is I need it to have IR capabilities since I use a Harmony Remote. Not sure if they all have IR

all boxes have IR capabilities, the sticks do not.As for recommending the 4 if you have a 4k TV ( or plan to buy one shortly) you will see the value in it but as Trekker stated for up to 1080 P the current Roku 2 is the best deal

I've thought about upgrading to Roku 4 (from the original 3) for the flower of it since I do have a 4K TV, but so many complaints about it have been posted here that it put me off. Since there are 4K apps in my smart TV and TiVo Bolt I don't gain much; basically 4K M-GO and more advanced sound for 4K Amazon and VUDU (Tivo's versions of those don't have 4K yet and the apps on my smart TV are restricted to sound format which can be transmitted over S/PDIF, so nothing better than basic DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1). Those things are not worth the aggravation I've read about here.

I own a Roku 4 and honestly I can't recommend it. Too many problems and it regularly fails to pull the 4k stream.

Personally, I would wait for new models. The Roku 4 has issues, and the Roku 1-3 is REALLY old hardware at this point.

The current Roku 2 is a good value and a good choice.

I'd go with the 2015 2 unless line of sight for the remote is going to be a problem than go with the 3.

OP wants IR, so it's not an issue for him.

For general information to prospective purchases, I agree with what you said. Note, though, that the Roku 3 remote, and its replacement, work with the Roku 2. And, at standard pricing, the Roku 2 still a better deal: $69.99 for Roku 2 with IR remote + $29.99 for replacement Roku 3 remote = $99.98 for a Roku 2, a WiFi remote, and an IR remote. Compare to $99.99 for a Roku 3 with a WiFi remote only.

Have had an XD for years and am satisfied with it. Recently bought a Roku 2 (2013). The navigation speed is perhaps just a bit faster than for XD, but otherwise hardly any difference at all.
I wouldn't get the Roku 2/3 and expect any great improvement over what you have now. But if you can get a good deal on a Roku 2 it would be good to have it in reserve in case the XD dies.

You have the model 2720 Roku 2, which was discontinued in April 2015. That device is similar to the Roku 1, and not much faster than the Roku 2 XS, Roku 2 XD, Roku 2 HD, or even your Roku XD. The current Roku 2, model 4210, which was introduced in April 2015, is the same device as the Roku 3, and is much faster than the Roku 1 or older Roku 2 devices.

I would get the Roku 2/3, and I would expect an improvement.

If you already have a device for your main TV and simply want to use the Roku for your bedroom TV, I would say not to buy a new device. I have a 3050, and it isn't much slower than my other devices (if at all slower). The analog output is a bonus for certain occasions. The ethernet connection won't help the menu "lag" (though a stronger processor will). Being able to use older GUIs is a bonus as well (I hate the newer ones on more "advanced" devices).

I would recommend only buying a new device for your bedroom TV as a "backup" (ie, the XD would be the backup to the new device). No need to spend extra money if you don't have to.

A refurbished new-generation Roku 2 can be had for $55 on the world's largest online seller. Even cheaper on ebay if you are lucky at bidding.
Currently going for $70 on Roku's own site.
The Stick is considerably cheaper and I have been very happy with it. Particularly like the fact that it powers up from my TV's USB, meaning I can eliminate one HDMI cable and one power supply cable from behind the TV. It is a bit faster than the XD, but not very...
Can be bought refurbished for less than $35.
