That's not new. It's the reason why rollbacks are not allowed. The apps will update as well.
This particular kind of screw-up is novel - in the five years i have been following Roku development i haven't seen something like that. In the big picture of things you are right, "this too shall pass".

All models >2222 will be receiving it, e.g. my RokuTV got it already (while set-tops haven't). Since RokuCo are pushing for developers to use their new "scenography" SDK that's under active development, it's important to them to keep the platform non-fragmented.
