Roku stick performance issues.

Sun Sep 18, 2016 5:13 am

i have a Roku stick that is slow to load.

i have searched a lot for an answer but keep finding streaming related issues instead...

so i have had the Roku about 6 months, and was great at first except the initial setup was a pita but that is not why i'm here.

my Roku has been slowing down gradually as time goes on and is almost unusable, it began to get slow loading channels, and has gotten much worse, once the Roku is streaming it works well, unless you try to pause.

i have already tried some troubleshooting, unplugging it, deleting some channels, changed to 5 GHz WiFi 'on 50 over 50 fios', replaced batteries in remote

i tried looking for a place in the settings for cache cleanup or anything like that but didn't see anything

is there anything i may have missed? any help is greatly appreciated.

It seems to be all of the channels, hulu for example will take forever to load the menu screens, and then plays the show or movie fine, no buffering no lag, then if you hit pause it doesnt respond for about 60 seconds, sometimes goes a little crazy

How did you switch to 5G? Mine won't even see the 5G even though only about 7' from the router. It only sees 2.4G

I have the fios quantum router, i didnt even know the roku supported the 5ghz. But all i did was select it when i went to reset the wifi during troubleshooting and it works fine, i actually noticed a faster response loading the stream, but it wont fix the menu screen lag

The name would be like fios xxxx 5g "x being router id"

Different routers have different settings, so it may not be enabled on your router, or the router does not support the dual band setup?

5G is active and working on my router. A Samsung Tab A has no problem seeing and using it.

well my router is on the same stand my tv is on, from what i read it can be interference from the tv, so an extender may help.

Found a work around for ROKU3 Wireless Interferrence Issue

anyway i am still trying to figure my issue out, if you have any more questions or issues, please start your own thread.

I know it'll be a pain, but have you tried a factory reset?

Well if a device thats only a couple months old is already acting like this and needs to be reset, how long till this happens again, almost not worth the hassle, guess ill be throwing this roku in the trash and looking for a new streaming device...

I guess I should throw my Android phone in the trash too, since I've had to reset it to factory defaults twice too. Electronics sometimes glitch. Even $600 Android devices.

Don't blame Roku for the inconvenience caused by you not staying in the up-and-up. If you like a channel, you should pay for it and get your own logins.

I struggled with the sticks for months with all the same problems, even though my ISP speed was at 300 mbps. Finally I ditched the sticks in favor of the ultra (using the 4660 boxes, recons available on Ebay for about $50-60) and put together a wired connect by using netgear 500 mbps and similar power outlet modems, also available for cheap on Ebay ($11-19).

This enabled me to port ethernet directly into power outlet at the cable box, and receive at any power outlet in any room. This ended all problems except occasionally (rarely) I have to reboot from roku home button or resync the system using settings>system restart. Overall I have very happy with this solution (vs wifi boosters etc which didn't really solve problems).

I run 3 boxes on my system and all work great. The "stick", in sum, isn't all its cracked up to be.
