Roku Express does not work with 5GHz wireless

Fri Dec 23, 2016 4:45 pm

After searching the internet, this forum and being online with tech support for over an hour I discovered that Roku Express does NOT support 5GHz Wireless.  If you read the spec is shows 802.11b/g/n.  These are only 2.4GHz.  Hoping this post will save some others some time.

I'm sure 11n is 5GHz as well. In fact, it uses either 2.4 or 5.

If you read the 802.11n standard, 5GHz is optional;

Wikipedia 802.11n info

Thus, a product that states 802.11n compliance can very well be 2.4GHz only.

Yep, I erroneously bought a USB WiFi adapter that stated 802.11n assuming it supported 5GHz. It didn't. It pays to do your research.

Yep, I didn't state it well. 11n supports both frequencies, but not every device has both radios.

The Roku express specs show 802.11 (b/g/n). If it handled 5ghz frequencies it should also list that it handles 802.11a. Just from the specs listed I know it should only handle 2.4ghz.

Of course they could always get their specs wrong. But typically when a product handles 5ghz it also has access to 802.11a.

Plus, products that have 5GHz WiFi support, tend to advertise it, since it's a selling point.

Just hit this one, great, so the old Roku stick had 5G support, but the new express does not?

So much for it being an upgrade.

The Express has never been an upgrade for a Stick. Why would you think it was?
