Soundbridge, Slimserver, BBCiplayer settings for non UK user

Sun Oct 25, 2009 8:34 am

So it looks like AlienBBC plug-in has run its course and today, no more BBC radio listen again streams

Reviewing this forum and Slimdevices forum on 3rd party plug-ins, I've added the BBC iPlayer plugin to my 7.3.2 version of Squeezecenter.

The menus have shown up fine, but nothing will connect to a stream. In the web interface on the PC, connecting shows up in the bottom left hand corner for maybe a second but nothing ever appears in the now playing window.

At the moment, Use Flash AAC, Use Flash MP3 and prefer WMA are all checked. I've tried using just the MP3 and the WMA only but neither made any difference.

The web instance of iPlayer is playing radio on the PC, so I'm not geolocked.

I didn't remove the Alien BBC plugin, its still checked as enabled. But menu items in there are doing the same thing. i.e. nothing - its like the link its serving is not a valid link

I'm in the US

Hoping for someone to have the easy fix. The new Top 40 is only hours away!!

Looks like I have a transcoding problem

I can't play the following AAC feed`http://www.somafm.com/illstreet48.pls and I only have options to transcode to FLAC or AIFF neither of which are supported by Soundbridge

How do add transoding for AAC to WAV to Squeezecenter?

Hi stevee,

Looks like I have a transcoding problem

No, I think you're complicating things. If you want to listen to Soma FM Illinois Street Lounge all you have to do is search for that station on your SoundBridge and play it directly or put http://somafm.com/illstreet.pls (this is the MP3 128 kbps stream) into one of your SoundBridge's Presets.

The BBC are actually migrating all their stations to WMA, so the listen again programming is currently unavailable. It's expected to be back in November, but will be WMA instead of Real Audio.

Listen Again in MP3 is only available for UK listeners and as Dupont said WMA is not yet available although I think Nov is only for Local radio - WMA for all station may be later. RealAudio Listen Again is still available for national stations but BBC website has changed and broke AlienBBC and it didn't seem worthwhile updating AlienBBC since its lifetime would be a few months.

BBCiPlayer playing AAC is not supported for 7.3.2 because the necessary streaming AAC transcoding support was only added to Squeezecenter in 7.3.3.

However, there are a number of users of 7.3.2 SC who therefore need AlienBBC for Listen Again so I am looking into providing a quick and dirty update - it will be a 2.6beta and so not on main threads.

Is updating to SC 7.4.x a reality for the Soundbridge?

I only use SC for BBC streams, so don't run the risk of 'breaking' any other schemes

I've always adopted new versions of Slimserver/Squeezecenter very late on the basis of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

I did get the WMA live streams to work. BBC7, 6Music etc in BBCiplayer, but as you note the listen again streams don't work in WMA.

stevee,

SqueezeCenter and AlienBBC are no longer needed to listen to the BBC's live streams on the SoundBridge as the WMA streams all play natively on the SB and aren't geo-locked any more.

Simply search for BBC with the remote, chose the station you want and click the play button.

Alternatively you can put the following URLs into your Presets:

Radio 1: http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r1.asx
Radio 2: http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r2.asx
Radio 3: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r3.asx
Radio 4: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4.asx
5Live: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r5l.asx
Radio 6: http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r6.asx
Radio 7: http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r7.asx

I have presets on my SB for the live streams. i discovered that WMA streams were no longer geolocked some weeks ago.

I do like the ability to use the listen again service.

Being five (or four) hours different to the broadcast schedule, I miss shows when they are broadcast and I can even play time-shifted especially at weekends.

I found another work around as well. Using the following website, I can obtain the URL for the real media stream and use the Tune In feature in Squeezecenter. This might be the work around until WMA is used on listen again streams

http://www.iplayerconverter.co.uk/choose_aod.aspx

bpa - thanks for your comments. If you want any beta testing on an Alien workaround, count me in.

Squeezecenter 7.4 seems to be the solution

BBC iplayer plugin works and transcodes the AAC listen again streams

Seems CPU intensive, needed to dial the buffer up to 15 seconds but does work.

For other readers of this thread, AlienBBC 2.5 has a menu called "Alternate Liusten Again" and this will play RealAudio.

To get AAC streams with BBCiPlayer the minimum SC version is 7.3.3 but best to use 7.3.4 as that has more bug fixes.

BBCiPlayer does a little more processing as it has to process Flash protocol. faad for AAC decode has more floating point operations but uses less memory than mplayer for RealAudio. AAC is better quality than RealAudio for the same bit rate.

It is better to use 7.4.1 rather than 7.4.0 as 7.4.0 has a number of bugs, the most relevant one is AAC->MP3 transcoding was broken.

I am succesfully using 7.5.1 and can get Listen Again steams in the United States.

Some days, for whatever reason, I am missing the "play" button in the web interface and those same days I can not get listen again or live streams to play from the Sounbridge either. I assume that there is something in the BBC web page that meas the BBCiplayer plug-in falls over decoding the URL's. It gets the all the shows but simply won't play

On the BBCiplayer plugin settings page, make sure you only have "use Flash AAC streams" checked only.I was told that the WMA and MP3 streams won't work outside the UK

I forget why, but I also put a copy of lame.exe in the server/bin/mswin32-x86-multi-thread folder

I mainly use Slimserver just for BBC streams, so as long as you keep the software upto date, it still keeps my trusty Soundbridges connected to the BBC

Its 7.15pm eastern and I am streaming Radio 4 listen again!

If its relevant I'm now on Windows 7 - must update my profile!

I have found that disabling AAC allows me to listen to Listen Again's but breaks Live Radio

Live and Listen Again feeds are working for me with just Flash AAC enabled. Doesn't always play first time, but second or third time works. Like I said in my previous post, sometime the BBC streams work and then sometimes not for me with no obvious reason (no changes in software or setup). The whole set-up is a bit flakey but when it works, it works just great.

I notice my iplayer plugin is now at version 1.1.9. I have automatically update plugins enabled

Another thing to check. In settings, Advanced, File Types. Be sure to only have the AAC to MP3 as the only enabled conversion. In the selection for AAC -> MP3 I have FAAD/LAME as the helper programs it will use.

I haven't looked on the Slimserver forums lately, but even though the Soundbridge support is not offered, sometimes there are folks having issues even with Slimdevices that can give some clues.

Before the iPlayer plug-in, there was another plug-in, now discontinued called AlienBBC and I got a lot of hints from postings over there. Good luck
