My long serving M1001 works well with my laptop when it is on, and running firefly connecting it to the DNS-323, but why can the M1001 see the DNS-323 but not see any of the music files? I.E. this is what the M1001 reads on display 'connecting to dlink-938f42 ..................... then connection to server failed' 'OK'
How do i set it so i can just have the DNS-323 on, rather than having to have my laptop on at the same time?

Can you give more detail about your set up. Are you running Firefly on the laptop or on the DNS323?

Well firefly is running on my laptop, but the problem is if i want to access the DNS323 just through the Soundbridge, it see's it, but not the files on it!
Is there a way to install firefly directly on the DNS323 so the soundbridge can access the files?

Looking at the Dlink site for this product I see that it has both an iTunes server (which may actually be Firefly, but that is not important) and uPnP server. The Soundbridge will support both, I suggest you try enabling each one individually to see what the outcome is on your Soundbridge. The set up seems quite straightforward on the DNS323 UI, make sure the correct music root folder is selected and no password set. If Firefly on your laptop can stream the same files from the DNS323 location to the Soundbridge then there is no reason why the inbuilt media servers should not.

I have been happily using a DNS-323 for several years. Here's my setup:

In the web browser where you access the controlling 'software', click on the 'Advanced' tab.

On the left side, click on 'UPnP AV SERVER'. Make sure the 'Disable' button is selected. Click on 'Save Settings'.

Do the same for 'DHCP SERVER'. Make sure it is disabled and save the settings.

Now click on 'iTunes SERVER'. Choose 'Enable'. Set the Folder where your music is located. Once again, click on 'Save Settings'.

Note that in this version of iTunes, the Playlist function which shows up on the Roku menu doesn't function.
