Debugging BrightScript code within XML file <script>

Hi All,
This might be a newbie question and if it is I apologize.
I have a simple SceneGraph channel with the init() and onKeyEvent() functions in the XML file.
I am using VSCode and the Brightscript extension.
When I run the debugger I am finding I cannot set any breakpoints in the init() and onKeyEvent() functions.
Is this expected behavior or am I doing something wrong?  What can I do to make this work
