Need to know how to reset the root password

Wed Oct 13, 2004 3:18 pm

Hi all - first post!!

Just received my HD1000 second hand from a US seller (I'm in the UK).

Having problems with getting Weather Six running. It just sits on the waiting screen for ever. Found a similar post, which suggested seeing what was going on using telnet.

Problem is the previous user can't remember the password!

Anyone know how to do a reset. I do have the guest password if thats of any help.

Thanks

Martin,

The /etc/passwd file should be readable even by the guest account. It also has the encrypted passwords in there (i.e. no shadow password file is used). Therefore copy it to another machine and run some password cracking program on it. If it's something simple enough - which, my guess is that it will be - a decent cracking program should be able to crack it fairly quick.

I've used "john" (http://www.openwall.com/john/) in the past with great results.

Or just "upgrade" the HD1000 but rename "update.rok" to "formatup.rok" which will wipe out everything (including the contents of the built-in storage).

Thanks Patrick. But that's way too easy, and not half as much fun! :D

Steve

Why it doesn't work on my win 10. Would you please share more details?
