Question regarding PB display setup

Tue Aug 16, 2005 4:33 am

I have had my Roku HD1000 set up for a few weeks now and I mainly use it to play .ts HD files networked from my PC.

My question is regarding what the best display set up I should use.

I have an LCD TV with a screen resolution of 1280x720, so it is ideally suited for displaying 720p HD video. However, if the file I am playing is a 1080i file (1920x1080) am I better off setting the Roku's output to match this (1080i) or should I just leave the Roku set at 720p regardless of the file type it is playing.

I just want to make sure I am getting the maximum picture quality that I possibly can.

Many thanks,
Kevin.

Depends on if the scaler in the Roku is "better" than the one in your TV. Since your TV's native resolution is 720, EVERYTHING eventually has to be scaled to 720. You can set the Roku to output 720 and let it scale the 1080 files itself, or you can set it to output 1080 and let the TV scale the 1080 file down to 720.

As for which is better, you'll have to try it both ways and see for yourself. Chances are there won't be a noticeable difference either way... :)

pg_rider,
I have a projector with 1024x768 native resolution, I thought inputing 720p would be the best "match" but when I put the projector into directview (suposedly sends the signal through without scaling), It comes out only a portion of my screen. Only when I set the resolution to 1080i do I get a full screen.

Is this a case of the projector scaling no matter what, or am I missing something?
