Playing Music: sort by track# instead of sort by title

Sat Jan 28, 2006 10:46 am

Friends of the Roku,

I was wondering, if there is a way to change settings for the playback of files:

situation:
I have a couple of music albums and named the files this way:
Pink Floyd - 01 - Signs of life.mp3
Pink Floyd - 02 - Learning to fly.mp3
etc.

The ID3 Tags are set correctly:
Artist: Pink Floyd
Album: A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Year: 1987
Track Number: 01

However, in the regular view of my PB (in mode "Listen"), I browse to my album of Pink Floyd and I see all the mp3 files, but sorted by file name not sorted by track number.

Is there a way to have the files sorted in different ways in PB?

thanks for your help!

As far as I know, there's no way to sort the list with the built-in music player. I am a bit confused, though. If the files are named the way you said "Pink Floyd - 01 - Signs of life.mp3" then the file name sort would be the same as the track number sort. Or do you have more than one album in the folder, so you're seeing all of the 01 tracks, then all of the 02 tracks, etc? If so, then you could separate the files into separate album folders under your Pink Floyd folder, then hit Play while the Pink Floyd folder is selected in Listen. Then it will playback each subfolder in track order.

Hi Endless,

thanks for the reply.

The problem is that the file-listing is not based on the filenames, but on the ID3-tags. And by considering only the field "tracktitle", the field "track#" is not considered and therefore the sorting goes only by tracktitle.

A possible workaround:
establish playlists of each album and select "playlists".

One other possiblity:
eventually 3rd party applications (like the SlimRoku) actually can do sort the files by filename and not by ID3 tag.

any comments?

That would certainly work, though the tracks in my folders are correctly sorted by filename (01. Song name.mp3), so I'm not sure why you'd see different behavior.

SlimRoku already has a "Browse by Folder" option that sorts by file name.

Sonica can read the ID3 tags and play them by track number.

Another vote for Sonica -- tied with MPlay for the best thing about the HD1000! Oh, and great choice of music!!!
