Memory Usage in .36 rev b

Tue Nov 22, 2005 2:25 am

What sort of memory usage are you guys getting on standby?

If the unit is used as intended it soon eats up all the mem and starts using swap.
After a reboot mine comes out like this

9:22am up 1 min, 1 user, load average: 1.03, 0.36, 0.12
50 processes: 49 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: 0.3% user, 3.4% system, 0.0% nice, 96.1% idle
Mem: 93424K av, 40352K used, 53072K free, 0K shrd, 7512K buff
Swap: 196600K av, 0K used, 196600K free 17100K cached

however since .35/36 everything seems pretty good.
Maybe a cron job to reboot it at night :-)

May I ask why are you using swap on a rev B?
I don't use swap most of the time on my Rev A!

Linux is like a gas, it expands to occupy all available space. Notice that you have 7M of buff. I bet that is what grows a lot.
Here is what mine says. I have a 'lite' /etc/inittab
  3:39pm  up 15 min,  1 user,  load average: 0.12, 0.38, 0.32
45 processes: 44 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states:  0.5% user,  3.3% system,  0.0% nice, 96.1% idle
Mem:    28912K av,   24872K used,    4040K free,       0K shrd,     436K buff
Swap:       0K av,       0K used,       0K free                    6056K cached

What do you see when you leave it running for a long time? If while running top, you hit capital M, you can see the processes sorted by memory usage.

M.-

PS: my 'lite' inittab:
::respawn:/bin/login -p
::respawn:/cascade
::respawn:/usr/local/bin/screenmon
::respawn:/usr/local/bin/readable-mounts
::respawn:/usr/local/bin/irremote
::respawn:/usr/local/bin/fpbuttons
#::respawn:/usr/local/bin/cascade_upnpd
::respawn:/usr/local/bin/mpegd
::respawn:/usr/local/bin/taskview
::respawn:/usr/local/bin/tcpserver -DHPRl 0 -u 0 -g 0 0 telnet /usr/sbin/in.teln
etd -h
#::respawn:/sbin/agetty -n -l /usr/local/bin/suguest 9600 tts/1
#::respawn:/bin/ntpd -g -n

Notice that UPnP, agetty and ntpd are commented out.

Thanks.
I have commented out all but ntpd.

swap, because when the units on for a while the mem is all used and it seemed like a good idea to have some more mem :-)

What kind of results do you get issuing a "free" command after a fresh boot, and then again after running SlimRoku for awhile?

With a Rev A, 128meg swap, and running 2.0.34, these are my results:
Clean Boot:
              total         used         free       shared      buffers
  Mem:        28920        26932         1988            0          452
 Swap:       131064         5228       125836
Total:       159984        32160       127824

After running SlimRoku for awhile:
              total         used         free       shared      buffers
  Mem:        28920        24580         4340            0          880
 Swap:       131064        12620       118444
Total:       159984        37200       122784
