Ver. 2.0.35 Rev.A

Finally got an HDTV and I'm noticing that all video emanating from the HD1000 is distorted. The menus, photos, and video playback all have a very slight warbled distortion.

This is a 1080p television and using both the 720p and 1080i component output have the same effect with no discernable degradation otherwise.

DVD playback pass through the HD1000 does not have this problem, it's perfectly distortion free so it's not the cabling.

Any ideas?

I am not a video expert and may very well be wrong, but "fools go where angels fear to tread" so...
My Sony rear-projection TV is rated to do 480P, 780, and 1080i. The ROKU on 1080 is wavy as you describe. So my assumption is that while the TV can do it, it does not do it well. My TV display looks really good with the ROKU set to 780. So that's what I do.
Your DVD player does 480, I believe. Try a lower setting, like 480P, if you are using component cables.
If this works, it may be the best your TV will do. If you feel it should do better, maybe contact tech support for the TV or the place where you bought it.

I was thinking that this may be a symptom of a power supply problem as I have seen this display behavior in other devices where bad power was evidenced by this warbled wavy distorted display on monitors.

I unplugged Roku for the first time in several months and after re-plugging, alas, it, is, no more. Nothing. No green light. Nada. I theorize this one thermal cycle was all it took to loosen whatever.

How hard is it to rig a power supply to this thing?

What else can I use to watch my network videos, listen to cds?

Whille I was feeling the Roku up for any warmth or other signs of life I put my ear to it to listen for any hum. I heard ticking. Ticking like my old 1972 Timex...What makes it tick?

I've opened 'er up and I can see what's making the ticking sound. It's a green LED on the powerboard flashing on and off about twice a second. What it means? No clue...

Sounds like a power supply in "crowbar" or some other overload protection. Does it do this with nothing but the power cord connected?

It's a switching power supply, so the tick you hear is probably the "switching" happening but something connected (or the PS itself) is overloading the supply and it "switches" off. Just a guess. But, it doesn't sound good.

I don't recall off top of head of the PS connection to main board is socketed or not? I've never opened mine as it's still under warranty. If it's socketed, and you can unplug it, and it stops ticking, I'd say something is wrong with the main board. But again, just guessing (to stimulate dialog by those who might REALLY know!).

Anyway most of the capacitor ends are bulging on the powerboard and one has stuff coming out the top.

This is my second HD1000. It's two years old. My first one died at two weeks of age under suspiciously similiar circumstances...

WELL, from that, I'd say definately the power supply is shot. The LED blinks faster cause there's no load with the mainboard disconnected. Bulging and leaking caps, that's the problem. The beefier external power supply in the "DOA" thread >SHOULD< fix you up if you're handy enough to give it a try. Sure hope the PS didn't take out the main board too...

I've got this family - mine I think - and they keep wanting things from me. I'm taking the HD1000 apart again before they wakeup to install a PS switch, I don't want this to be a 24 /7 ionic air filter...
