A "The Great '80's" Channel?

Thu Aug 05, 2010 6:56 am

A friend of mine sent me a link to this website:

http://www.thegreat80s.com/Random-80s-Metal-Videos.html

It plays nothing but random '80's metal and rock videos which is actually pretty much fun. I was wondering if it would be possible to create a Roku channel that would do this sort of thing or is the licensing stuff making that impossible?

I could kill a lot of time with a channel like this. It's like turning on MTV when they played all music. Fastway!? Really!? I do so hope to hear Dave King belt one of those songs out at a Flogging Molly show one day.

If anyone wants to (if/until there is a channel) you can download videos from this site into itunes format with RealPlayer SP (free) and stream them to your roku with Chaneru. I'm sure you could do this several ways but RealPlayer to Chaneru takes 2 mouse clicks. It doesn't get much easier!

I want it!!!! Sounds like the short-lived Tube Channel on Cable. If this channel existed, I might watch it even more than Netflix! If I had the programming skills I'd try to write a channel, but since I don't, hopefully someone will come up with it soon. I love 80s music and videos, and when I had cable I paid extra to get the tier that had VH1-Classic just for that reason. To have it on my Roku would be awesome!

When someone creates a channel for this, hopefully they'll include a section for the Pop music of the 80s too (on the same site). Some people might also be interested in a great 70s channel, the same people have a site for that as well.

Count me in on this. I spent my teen years in the 80s and loved every moment of it. Bring it on! :D :!:

Actually, just add the VEVO channel. You can search by artist or select a video from the existing categories. Once you play one it kind of works like Pandora and will keep playing video's that are similar. You can also create an account on your pc or iPad and make customized playlists to play on your Roku.I use the VEVO channel all the time now that I've added it. I've seem more hair and spandex in the last week than I've seen in the past 20 years. It is great. Thanks Roku!

Yeah! Just got into the VEVO channel last night---I relived my early-MTV youth with Ultravox, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, the Police and lot of others. Great channel!

Humm...maybe that's why Vevo doesn't do much for me. I'm pre MTV.

It would be great to have an all 80's channel that played the 80's cartoons, family shows like "Family Ties", etc, 80's Talk shows and Music videos. I would pay to watch it. I would take the 80's back, over the stuff they have today.. We have some very talented developers on this forum.. Please someone create an 80's channel....
