Roku 2 XS issues - please help

Fri Jul 29, 2011 6:52 am

I got my roku 2 xs yesterday. Unpacked and set it up. After connecting to
wireless, I encountered first issue. It said unable to 'connect to roku'.
Checked signal strength, excellent as usual. Tried again and it downloaded
firmware etc. Then signed in and had the channels downloaded and synched.

Every time I try to watch netflix, crackle, or any other channel, I get a very
long 'retrieving' message. There is a bar on bottom like the roku 1 xd but it
doesn't want to move. About 1/3 the time, I get booted back to home screen or
show/movie selection screen. Other times the show never plays or it starts a few
minutes later and abruptly kicks back to home screen or title screen,or says
retrieving within a minute or so.

A couple times I get a code and message about my connection. Every time I check,
strength it is excellent. For about 3 hours I got the same result.

So I call customer service and go through the same problems with him on the
phone. That does not work so he has me unplug modem, router, and roku and try
again - same result. Same for paper clip reset.

Then he had me change router settings - channel, dns, etc
Same result

I then plug in one of my roku1 xd units in same place with same connections and
works as usual. I am at a loss.

I have two roku 1 xd units both of which work fine except for a rare pause and
change in quality but only 720p max on 99.9% of all content. Not sure how box
exclaims customer service told me 1080p was coming within a month.
Don't believe though after reading forum.

The roku 2 xds pretty much does not play anything. It would be in retrieving
mode more than watching mode. I did see the 1080p and it looks real nice but for
some reason the majority of the time video was on screen it was blocky and
uglier than my roku 1 xd @720p

I am at a loss. Will try wired connection tonight but for roku 1 xd, the change
was not noticeable. I actually bought 1 xd the week before the new roku 2 units
came out (blindsided) so it is sitting in a box waiting to see if it will be returned but I'm
wondering if it should be the roku 2 instead. Unless I am missing something, I
think the only way it would be playable is with a major firmware update.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The roku customer service guy abruptly got off the phone but I am supposed to get a return phone call...

honestly I think you are approaching this the correct you said, later tonight try the wired connection just to try and narrow down the possible causes....if there is no change on the wired connection then I would suggest PM'ing a mod here (moderators are listed at the top of individual forums)....both RokuShawn memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=48334 and RokuJames memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=16053 have been quite helpful in the past.

and I am sure I don't need to tell you this but obviously if things work well on a wired connection we can logically assume the issue is specific to wireless.

I believe your problem is widespread. I get it intermittantly. I think there are specific wireless router settings that are needed and I am experimenting with it.

Thanks for the responses thus far. Wanted to give a quick update. I moved the unit from where it had been (and where xd was) and put it on other side of tv in anticipation of plugging in the ethernet wire plus also removed some channels because the xd units would frequently say there was not enough storage. Anyhow I tried again wirelessly and it worked. I just watched two shows without interruption and in 1080p. I do not yet consider this resolved. Will see what happens this weekend but I'm hopeful.

So either I had too many channels or the roku 2 xs is much more sensitive than my roku 1 xd.

It I'd definitly wireless strength. Once it hit 7-8, my video nose dived. After connecting ethernet cable, it has been working fine. So bottom line, the change from 720 to 1080 is demanding and your wifi might not be enough even if it worked on your roku1. I would recommend you get the xs if you live in apt/condo (many networks) or there is long distance to your router.
