Full tv Episode from a website to my Roku

Tue Feb 19, 2013 6:33 am

I am new to Roku, just bought it yesterday.

Is there any way to access a full episode from a website on the Roku? For example: http://www.aetv.com/...-dynasty/video/

I simply want to watch free full episodes from several different websites on my tv. If possible, I don't want to have to plug in my laptop to my tv.

I asked on the Facebook Roku site and have received some feedback. Someone mentioned Plex (which I haven't yet figured out), and another said Playon (which looks promising, but worried my computer may not be fast enough for it). Are there any other options, or am I gonna have to attach my laptop?

If this is possible and you have the patience to provide me with instructions, I would be grateful. Please limit your technical lingo; it's foreign to me

Basically, install Plex Media Server (there's a Plex Media Center, which is basically just a Media Player to play content from the Plex Media Server on a PC, so don't install Media Center).

You then sign up for a MyPlex account.

Then you go into the Roku Channel Store (better to go on the website via PC, so you can search easier). Install Plex Channel on Roku. Then you setup the Plex Channel with your MyPlex account.

Now on the computer go to https://my.plexapp.com/queue and click on "Add Video". Drag and drop the "Plex It!" button to your Bookmarks/Favorites bar. When you see a video you want to watch on Roku, just click on that Bookmark, it will add the stream to your Plex Queue (assuming it's compatible). Then you should see it in your "Queue" on the Plex Channel on the Roku.

Can't advise you on the other channel on this forum, you will have to get support from their forums. Also, not a bad idea if you have trouble with Plex to ask in their forums either.

Well this is not something Roku does by default. Plex would probably be the best option with their Plex it app or whatever they call it now. The easiest thing day in and day out us to augment your Roku with an HTPC and just go to full screen video on your television.

I'm gonna jump in on the side of HTPC for those wanting to stream content from network Websites. I've tried a few solutions (not Plex, but others) and found that the simplest user experience is an HTPC.

Now, I know that A&E (the network you referenced) has now released an app for iOS devices, though it's not available on Apple TV. I can't say that this means they'll be releasing apps for other devices, but it does mean they're beginning to make their content available via some non-computer devices. It would be nice if the Roku device was on their roadmap, but I have no idea if it is or isn't.

Thanks for the replies! I will try Plex again. I have posted in their forums, but no reply yet.

HTPC...yikes, dumb it down for me. I know this is a Home Theater PC, beyond the name, I'm clueless. Any advice?

^ Just connect your laptop directly to your TV and you have an HTPC.

+1
And for added convenience, get a bluetooth keyboard+mouse so you can control the laptop from the couch - unless you prefer long cables running through your entertainment system.

Very good. I think I can make that work. Not giving up on Plex yet, but can't seem to get A&E or SyFY to work. Thanks for your help!

Some websites have measures in place to prevent such streaming via Plex and the other channel, so could be that you are running into that.

I think the SyFy channel has been broken for couple of months from what people were saying in the Plex support forum. SyFy changed things up on their end. Roku does have a SyFy channel available through the Channel Store but it doesn't carry full episodes.

The better route with Plex might be to install the Unsupported Channels App (http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/25523-unsupported-appstore/), then install apps like SS Plex (http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/48412-rel-ss-plex/) and Let Me Watch This (http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/36855-rel-letmewatchthis/) (and others) that allow access to most TV show series. You can watch most of the SyFy lineup this way, and probably most of the A&E content too.

Thank you for the Plex Let Me Watch This idea. It has taken me nearly all day to figure it out. Finally have the channel showing up on my Roku, but when I try to actually watch an episode, my only option is to "Mark as Watched." So, I haven't actually watched anything on this channel. Advice?

Most likely Plex can't stream that particular video. Again, it's not always going to work for every video stream on the internet.

Hmmm, how do I figure out what it can and can't stream? I have tried other shows just to test it out, but I get nothing.

@Heatherly30, I replied on the PLEX forum to your post. Any how I totally agree with bennor3814. SS PLEX & LetMeWatchThis is the way to go.

Using the "PLEX IT!" button is hit or miss. I've tried may places that have streaming video (AMC.com, Bravotv, Stream2k,Clicktoview,Filenuke, etc etc etc) and have found only YouTube & Vimeo work with "PLEX IT!" Maybe its a transcoding issue. IDK. All I do know is that it will stay "searching" for video.

Yesterday, I uninstalled the Unsupported App Store and re-installed it. Today, I see the icon in my channels, but when I click on LetMeWatchThis, now the only option is to uninstall.

Is there a possibility that the version of Plex that I'm using is causing issues? (Just downloaded Plex for the first time last week).

Is there another version of Unsupported App Store I should use? Should I also install the LetMeWatchThis.bundle? https://github.com/R...atchThis.bundle

Thanks for your patience.
