TCL Roku TV - WiFi Direct - Enterprise Enviroment

Mon Aug 28, 2017 1:19 pm

We ran in to an issue with the TCL Roku 32S301 and WiFi Direct.

We use a WiFi Direct policy option to prevent clients from sharing WiFi through WiFi Direct.

The option on Cisco gear is called Xconnect-Not-Allow, which tells the client they can have WiFi Direct enabled, but can not share the connection.

The TCL Roku 32S301 filters the SSIDs and the users can not see them to even try to connect.

The fix for us was to set the WiFi Direct Policy to Disabled which allows any WiFi Direct configuration to connect, but this is against our security policy.

We did not have this issue with Insignia Roku TVs nor Roku devices themselves, only the TCL Roku TVs.

TCL model 32S301-W
Software Version 7.2.5 build 6316-08 and 7.7.0 build 4117-08

What is it that you are trying to do?  Are you trying to cast to the screen?

Trying to connect to WiFi with WiFi Direct Client Policy set to Xconnect-Not-Allow per our security policy.

TCL Roku TV filters the SSIDs with Xconnect-Not-Allow so they are not displayed.

Even trying to connect through the Private Network option the TVs will not connect.

Only way to get the TCL Roku TVs to see the SSIDs and connect is to set the Wi-Fi Direct Clients Policy to Disabled.

From Cisco Documentation about Wi-Fi Direct Clients Policy.

  • Disabled—Ignores the Wi-Fi Direct status of clients thereby allowing Wi-Fi Direct clients to associate
  • Allow—Allows Wi-Fi Direct clients to associate with the WLAN
  • Not-Allow—Disallows the Wi-Fi Direct clients from associating with the WLAN
  • Xconnect-Not-Allow—Enables AP to allow a client with the Wi-Fi Direct option enabled to associate, but the client (if it works according to the Wi-Fi standards) will refrain from setting up a peer-to-peer connection

Why not disable the Wi-Fi Direct on the Roku TV? Doesn't need to be on to use the Wi-Fi for connecting to a WAP. That's only for Screen Mirroring and Remote Controls  using RF (as well as using the Hotel/Dorm Room function for authenticating against Wi-Fi requiring user authentication via browser).

Great idea to turn off WiFi Direct, but the TV has no option to do this.

Look for "Device Connect" option. I believe if you set that to "Disable", that disables the Wi-Fi Direct.

There are no settings to turn off WiFi Direct.

Even if WiFi Direct was on, these TVs are not following standards.

You should still be able to see the SSIDs, the TV should still connect to the WiFi with WiFI Direct enabled, and then the TV would not allow connections through WiFi Direct.

I'd be interested in you throwing a regular roku (non-tv) into the network and see if it also cannot see the SSIDs.  I could imagine they baked this into all Roku firmware so that their devices that NEED WiFi Direct for the remote aren't essentially bricked by connecting.

No issues with Insignia Roku TVs nor with standalone Roku boxes.

Only the TCL Roku TVs have this issue.
