Hello,

I haven't been able to get WDEL 1150 AM on my internet radio for several weeks.

Can you get it so it streams again? The station plays on my computer but when I go into radioroku.com and select to play the station on the radio it just keep retrying.

Anything to help is appreciated.

StreamTheWorld (http://www.streamtheworld.com/) are a streaming provider. In the case of WDEL and many other stations they provide AACplus streams which the SoundBridge can't handle.

Are there any plans to upgrade the roku internet radio so it will receive this type of stream?

I have really enjoyed my radio and would hate to not be able to use it to listen to my favorite stations.

I was checking out WDEL (and other similar stations) the other day, and wasn't able to find a solution. If I'm understanding the situation correctly, our Soundbridges are able to play certain streams from StreamTheWorld, but they apparently are only in the nature of .asx and .pls streams that are running parallel to their proprietary (flash-based?) streams. These parallel streams are provided by StreamTheWorld for radios like ours that can't decode their proprietary streaming protocol.

Since the .asx and .pls urls don't work for WDEL and other stations, I suppose these stations (and/or their corporate parent(s)) would have to be asked to provide similar parallel streams for people like us. Perhaps if they knew the significant number of people using Roku and similar radios for listening to online streams, these other stations/companies would consider providing parallel streams for us.

Please correct my understanding if any of it is wrong...

StreamTheWorld use Flash for the player on the websites, but they don't use Flash streams (which in reality are video streams with audio only).

Their Flash player plays either MP3 or AACplus streams. In the case of WDEL and others, StreamTheWorld only provide AACplus streams in a format that the SoundBridges (and other internet radio devices like the Reciva based ones) can't handle.

StreamTheWorld's audio URLs (.pls and .asx) which you list contain multiple stream URLs so that more listeners can connect to the station (and there are fallback streams, too). The content of both the .pls and .asx files is identical, so there's no need to have them both (.pls usually is the better alternative for the SoundBridge).

The audio URL for WDEL is http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WDELAMAAC.pls. It will play in Winamp and other software players, but not on the SoundBridge.

BTW: StreamTheWorld's (and for example LiquidCompass's) switch to AACplus generally is a good move, because AACplus provides higher quality than MP3 at low bitrates. It's Roku's fault that the SoundBridge only has preliminary support for this audio codec. But that's no longer of any importance, I guess, as the M1001 has finally died and the R1000 will decease soon.

I'm not at home right now to check for Roku compatibility, but my Palm Treo smartphone (using Kinoma Play 4EX) will play the following three urls for WDEL just fine:

Wondering whether the presence of both "AAC" and "MP3" in thse urls means that WDEL is streaming in both formats simultaneously for increasing compatibility with various devices.

They don't (and technically I don't think that would be possible). It's just STW's naming convention. All three streams are AAC@32kbps.
